Pedagogical activities experience - 40 years.

In 1970 - 1980 he researched at the Computing Center of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences and in 1980 was directed to work at the newly established Department of Numerical Mathematics of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences, now the Institute of Numerical Mathematics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He has greatly assisted in organizing the Institute where he has been working as a leading researcher since its establishment.

In 1975, V. I. Agoshkov completed a post-graduate course in numerical mathematics at the Computing Center of Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and successfully defended his PhD thesis ‘Variational methods in neutron transport problems’ (under the supervision of G. I. Marchuk). In 1988, he defended his DSc thesis ‘Generalized solutions of problems in transport theory and their smoothness properties’(speciality–Differential equations and mathematical physics). In 1994, he became Professor of the Institute of Numerical Mathematics, Russian Academy of Sciences.

Valery I. Agoshkov is the author of over 335 papers, 20 books and manuals, four of his monographs were published in foreign languages.

Valery I. Agoshkov accomplished a series of works in the field of the boundary value problem theory for transport equations. He puted in the new functional spaces, investigated the properties of these spaces (the existence of traces, the extension theorems, the imbedding theorems), was the first to formulate the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of generalized solutions and studied the properties of their smoothness. He developed the principles of the general reflection operator theory and carried out unique investigations on the application of these operators to the development of domain decomposition methods in problems of the transport theory. These results are fundamental and unique in the mathematical theory of the transport equation problems.

He is the initiator (in collaboration with Prof. V. I. Lebedev) of researching the special classes of pseudodifferntial operators and named these operators as the "Poincare–Steklov operators". In 1981–1992, Agoshkov V.I. carried out investigations in the theory and applications of these operators. He is the author of the new trend in the theory of domain decomposition methods for the mathematical physics problems based on the Poincare–Steklov operator theory and on the general reflection operators for transport equations, which has been acknowledged by the scientific community worldwide.

A series of Agoshkov’s papers is devoted to the theory of adjoint equations and perturbation algorithms in nonlinear problems. In 1991–2007, he developed the general methodology for the investigation and numerical solution to a broad class of inverse problems and control problems, which opened a new trend in this area of mathematics. He and his disciples obtained significant results on the applying of this methodology to the class of variational data assimilation problems for complex mathematical models (neutron transport problems, geophysical hydrodynamics, heat conduction theory, the theory of wave processes, evolution problems).

Valery I. Agoshkov successfully combines research with pedagogical activities. He has been teaching since 1972. He is now Professor of the Moscow M. V. Lomonosov State University and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. While teaching at the Novosibirsk State University, MIPT, the MGU, he published a number of courses and special lectures. He supervises students research activities, thirteen of his disciples defended PhD or DSc theses, thus, he plays an important role in educating high-class researches.

Valery Agoshkov is the prize-winner of ‘The Best Scientific Work for 1989’ of the Mathematics Department of the USSR Academy of Sciences for the development of the Poincare–Steklov operator theory and its application to the construction and optimization of domain decomposition algorithms.

V.I. Agoshkov is the Honoured Scientist of Russia (Decree of the President of Russia of 24 September, 2007).
